Think about how long you want the three periods to be (Depending on other commitments (school days) maybe 30 mins.)
Think about a reward for completing the sheet (a batch of brownies, Smores, watching a movie together, even some extra money)
At a time of the day when there is no conflict (do not ask these questions when you are asking you child to stop screens) - maybe at dinnertime - this works well at our house or before bedtime. Also use yourself as an example - we use screens too much too.
Ask your child the following questions;
Do you ever lose track of time when on your device? (Share that you sometimes do.)
Have you ever felt anxious, uptight or even a little unwell/nauseous after playing games for a long time or watching too much YouTube?
(For older kids) Do you ever worry that you are missing out on things because it is hard to get off screens ?
What are your favorite things to do which do not involve screens? Write them down as a family. Share your lists.
After the conversation:
Introduce the idea of completing a No screens challenge.
Mention that sometimes you feel as though you will never remember the hours you were on Facebook but you do remember the time....(Pick an activity off someone's list).
Explain this week we are going to do a challenge. Show them the No screens challenge sheet.
If there is an incentive - let them know.
Remind them to fill in the emojis so they can remember how they felt and review which things made them better?
