Isabella Baumfree was born into slavery in late 18th century New York. Fleeing bondage with her youngest daughter, she renamed herself Sojourner Truth and embarked on a legendary speaking tour. She became known as an electrifying orator and her speeches impacted thousands of people in communities across the United States

Storytime - which thematically focus on peacemaking, kindness, diversity, and creating positive social change. Parents and children engage together for stories and connecting activities or resources.
In 1959 Richard and Mildred Loving plead guilty to being an interracial married couple residing in Virginia.
Despite having married in Washington, D.C. in 1958, the couple was sentenced to a year in jail with the understanding that after their incarceration, they would leave the state of Virginia for the next 25 years.
They later won the fight challenging this same law with a Supreme Court decision that struck down all bans on interracial marriage in the US.
Watch the Kwame Alexander read aloud from his book The Undefeated, which remembers unforgettable, unafraid and unbowed, famous and overlooked figures from black history.
The Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center is one of the oldest community organizations dedicated to the memory of Harriet Tubman. Over the past three decades, their efforts have included memorials to Tubman, tours to significant sites associated with her life, museum exhibits, educational programming, celebrations and community outreach.
